Heather Mills on DIY fashion and Mother’s Day gifts

Spring is here. It won’t be long before the daffodils are out and most people are thinking about buying something new for that gorgeous summer we are going to have!

But how about doing something with the clothing you already have instead of buying a whole new wardrobe for the change of season? Dyes can be inexpensive and lots are now vegetable-based and environmentally friendly. Why not get those old favourites out of the wardrobe and freshen them up with a new colour, or sew on some added detail? In essence, my new ethical fashion label Be@One will be doing just that, and I look forward to revealing the collection to you in the near future.

As the days start getting longer, I think it’s important to promote self-sufficiency. We can start to plan our summer crops, sowing our seeds in a timely fashion to achieve the best results. Even the smallest of outdoor spaces, a balcony, can be used to grow crops for your table.

And with Valentine’s Day this week and Mother’s Day looming on 14 March, start thinking outside the box about gifts. You don’t have to have a fortune to create thoughtful presents. Why not get some non-toxic paint and rejuvenate some old plant pots with a seed of your choice in each? February is a good time to start off some seedlings, so why not say it with tomatoes?

If space and time are not on your side, buy some reasonably priced olive oil and cut a few twigs of rosemary or a similarly decorative herb. Put the herbs in the fanciest bottles you can find along with some garlic cloves, top up with the oil and print off your own labels with something like, ‘Nothing says I love you more than garlic infused with rosemary…..’.

This works with all kinds of things from basil to chili, and you can do the same with pickles or jams you may have left over. It might be an inexpensive present, but it is highly personalised and original – something I know I’d be flattered to receive.

Heather’s Diary

Our singles night falls on Saturday 13 February this week, and it looks set to be a great-fun evening. We have a selection of Reiki healers to correct your centre and leave you revitalised. There’s and angel card reader who will tell you what to expect in your love life in the months to come, and a masseuse to bust that stress in your neck and shoulders. We have flowers from the fabulous Flowers Unlimited and a star prize from Champneys in our raffle. There will also be board games and prizes, plus our usual fabulous menu filled with special treats.

Calling all earth mothers!

This mother’s day, come down to VBites to celebrate all things ‘motherly’ with our mother earth day. On Sunday 14 March VBites will be hosting a special day to not only celebrate mothers, but also our mother nature. Events and activities will be going on throughout the day, with prizes and giveaways for our deserving mothers. Call 01273 933757 to book now!

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk

» Artists Open Houses

AOH Special: It’s Festival time in Brighton & Hove, which means the Artists Open Houses have opened their doors for another year! Maps of all the trails can be picked up across the city. We love nothing better than browsing and buying arts and crafts, and there is so much going on throughout May that we’ve made it easier by bringing the Artists Open Houses to you! We have 11 special programmes, featuring artists in their own houses. So here’s your chance to go ‘through the keyhole’ so to speak as we visit the artists in their own environment.
