Brighton Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas cleared of fracking protest charges

Brighton Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas has been found not guilty after she was arrested during anti-fracking protests at Balcombe last summer.

The Green politician was standing trial with four others for her part in a protest outside the site where Cuadrilla was undertaking exploratory drilling on August 19.

A large group of about 80 people welcomed Ms Lucas on the Brighton Magistrates’ Court steps after she was cleared of wilful obstruction and a public order offence today (Thursday April 17).

Speaking to Latest TV she said the decision was “not cause for celebration” and it was important to focus on the wider campaign against the controversial drilling technique.

She added prison was “never on the cards” but said it was something she was prepared to do to take a stand.

Speaking on the court steps, she said: “We’re very pleased that the court upheld our right to peacefully protest against fracking but the judgement is not a victory or cause for celebration.

“We will continue to campaign to end fracking and only celebrate when our world is on the path to a clean energy future.”
