101 Holes in 13 Hours …

Longest Day of the Year? It was longer for West Hove 101 Club. Keen golfers raised over £7,000 for Macmillan in Sussex by doing 101 holes in 13 hours!

Mark Gully and Gary Salt’s Team of Fundraising Golf Fanatics, ‘Team Spirit’, couldn’t have been higher when two teams from West Hove Golf Club completed their Longest Golf Day Challenge on Monday 30 June. As if 72 holes were not enough, the West Hove Team increased their challenge to 101 holes to celebrate the Macmillan Longest Day Golf Challenge. On what was a blistering hot day, these golfing fanatics successfully completed 101 holes in an amazing 13 hours, raising over £7k for Macmillan nurses in Sussex.

The team of eight, ranging in age from 15 to 55, started out at 4am and didn’t sit or rest until they’d completed the gruelling challenge in record time. Team Manager Mark Gully signed the team up just eight weeks before the challenge, and with the support of Gary Salt, the West Hove Golf Club General Manager, managed to raise one of the highest amounts in the country for this challenge.

John Miller, one of the team members, quoted: “It was important for me to take part – we all get wrapped up in our day to day lives and I wanted to get involved and help others. You never know when YOU will need that help.” Another team member quoted: “a friend of mine lost a family member to cancer, and without the support from Macmillan they could not have seen a way through such a terrible set of circumstances.”

Sarah Coxhill, Sussex Fundraising Manager, says: “This team of fun loving, generous spirited and superior golfers raised enough funds to pay for over 300 hours of Macmillan nursing care to those affected by cancer, ensuring that no one in Sussex faces cancer alone. Macmillan are in awe of their achievement as a team of people with busy lives, jobs and families. They pulled together a fantastic event and a huge amount of money. I’d like to really shout about this to show others what can be done with a bit of enthusiasm and support from a team.”
