Bored Gamers: Where has time gone?

Greg Marshall: time, it’s anything but consistent

Having already conducted a study of literary time travel in this column some weeks back, I thought it would be fun to return to the theme as we consider the other chronological truism, that like a bird, a plane and even Superman, time does indeed fly.

It is an almost certainty that you have all exclaimed recently; “where has the year gone?” And it would be a fair comment. It seems that 2014 started so recently and yet you can now buy Christmas tinsel and other festive paraphernalia right next to the pumpkins. Time has always seemed anything but consistent. From that dragging conversation with that acquaintance you always considered a pillock to the fleeting childhood moments of a loved one, from nappy-crapping to zit-popping in the blink of an eye.

From nappy-crapping to zit-popping in the blink of an eye

My “where has time gone?” moment happened recently when considering how many episodes of Bored Gamers have aired. It is terribly clichéd to trot out such a phrase as “it seemed only yesterday…”, but it genuinely does feel that the jump from the first episode to the eighth hitting the air was in part due to a strange time anomaly.

Another way of considering it is by actual minutes. Our one hour show each week is in actuality 44 minutes long, with gaps for ad breaks. So our eight shows (at time of writing), comes to a whopping 352 minutes of telly-time, or a little under six hours. To put this into perspective, Fawlty Towers ran for two six episode series, at 30 minutes an episode. Thusly, we are one episode – our Halloween special – away from having more minutes of Bored Gamers in the television aether than of Basil smacking Manuel or “not talking about the Germans!” We are over half way to having more Bored Gamers than the collective 682 minutes of the Lord Of The Rings trilogy – the extended versions, that is!

Though we will not be snapping at the heels of Corrie or Last Of The Summer Wine anytime soon, I hope you will humour me long enough as I take in what seems like a momentous achievement. I would celebrate with a nice bottle of vino, but I fear no sooner had I poured the first glass it would be the next morning with the accompanying sore head. Still, time is too fleeting to let that dissuade me – Cheers!

Bored Gamers is an hour-long weekly show on all things gaming.
Tune in to see it on Latest TV at 9pm every Friday night.
