Hands down favourite

T his week, I’ve got the perfect antidote to the November gloom. Head up to the Round Georges pub in Sutherland Road, Kemptown, and imbibe the amazing abstracts by local favourite Geoff Hands (along with a Rioja or two, of course). Geoff’s exceptionally expressive seascape and landscape-inspired paintings blur the line between the figurative and the abstract. And though his most recent work might appear highly gestural at first glance, hidden depths imply the influences of his visual memories of various locations in Cornwall and Sussex.
Says Geoff: “My painting practice mediates between a semi-figurative, painterly language and the impact of more abstract, non-figurative, imagery. In addition to allowing recollected, contingent, experiences from sea and landscape environments to contribute to the conception and making of the work shown here, I am also motivated by the actual process of painting in itself and in exploring improvisation with colour.”
If you’d like to meet Geoff in person, make a date for Saturday 5 December, from 7 to 9pm, when the Round Georges gallery will be open all evening while jazz trio, ‘The Heroes of Rhythm’, play live in the main bar from 8pm.

Don’t miss: We’ve much admired the work of Seiko Kato, an illustration graduate of Brighton University. So excited to hear that not only is she designing a unique, site-specific installation for Corridor Gallery, but she will also be creating intricately hand-cut collage work live in the space on selected dates! Corridor Gallery will also house new additions and exclusive pieces of her hugely popular range of merchandise. From 28 November.
Also, looking forward to ink_d gallery’s Christmas Group Show. A special highlight this year is an exclusive print release from Jake Wood-Evans and other artist-led events. From 21 November until Christmas Eve.
