Operation Black Antler: Hydrocracker & Blast Theory

I hate reviews that tell me too much in advance of seeing, and to talk in detail about this extraordinary piece of work could not only spoil it for the audience but also for the cast. This is of course partly what Operation Black Antler is about, covert activity, secrets, clandestine activity and subversion. But who is being subversive? Only you can decide and two hours after my first text messaged directions I was left questioning almost everything that I had seen and of course done. Immersive theatre is a fragile thing, how good it is can be as dependent on how well I or you perform within it as it is on the cast. I was lucky to be in a unit of three and we took it, for the most part, very seriously indeed. As a result this was an extraordinary experience, mind stretching, exhausting and provocative. We needed a drink after, and continued to discuss. Unmissable stuff, beautifully crafted and delivered by two remarkable companies, the stuff that makes Brighton Festival great.
