Brighton Lights – What to do in the city: w/c 24th January

Music & Entertainment with Joe Fuller

1

1 Black metal band Oathbreaker sound strikingly similar to Deafheaven, with chiming softer interludes between thrilling barrages of noise. No wishy washy vocals or studied nonchalance here: you’ll get a full-blooded rock gig from a band riding high off their sensational album Rheia.
A passionate, friendly metal crowd is always a plus too.
The Haunt, 28 Jan, 7pm

2 Chamber choir Brighton Consort perform a selection of beautiful music for unaccompanied voices by composers Clemens non Papa, Guerrero, Victoria, Vivanco, Palestrina, Lobo and Rossi. One of my favourite musical forms, the string quartet, will also feature with movements from major Haydn and Beethoven works.
St George’s Church, 28 Jan, 7.30pm

3 For not much more than the cost of a normal cinema ticket you can attend a special event encore screening of No Man’s Land with NT Live. The Pinter play stars Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen and got five stars from our own Andrew Kay, who praised the actors for making it “masterfully approachable”.
Duke’s At Komedia, 26 Jan, 8.30pm

4 Born in Boko Harum, the poet and playwright Inua Ellams left Nigeria for England when he was only 12. Inua will tell stories about escaping fundamentalist Islam, directing an arts festival, drinking wine with the queen and more. Spending an evening with an immigrant at this show can only be a good idea in these terrifying, exclusionary times.
The Old Courtroom, 28-29 Jan, 7.30pm

Comedy with Victoria Nangle

5 The joy of Broken Biscuits is the variety of flavours and tastes that are tantalised and treated – and so it is with this evening of comedy, spoken word and music. Featuring a blend from Lorraine Bowen, Jo Neary, Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer, Idle Eye, as well as short animations from Dan Laidler, host Kate Tym has plenty to engage most entertainment tastes.
Komedia, Sunday 29 January, 7.30pm, £12/10

6 Jack ‘the lad’ Whitehall is in town for two days and three shows, with the star of sitcom, stage and chat show bringing his brand new stand up show to the Brighton Dome. Tickets are only available as returns, so camp out by the box office in hope.
Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Sunday 29 & Monday 30 January, 4pm (Sat) & 8pm (Sat & Sun), £31/26.50

Arts with Brighton’s Arty

7 It’s always fascinating to come across a new artist who has discovered their creative talent through a less conventional route. Take Charlotte Donald Wilson, whose work at the Royal Sussex County Hospital inspires her to draw from the beauty she finds in the natural and biological world. You’ll find her beautiful illustrations at Studio 45 in the Open Market.

8 The BRAVO awards (Brighton Restaurant Awards Vote Online) are coming soon, and one of our favourite local photographers Xavi Dom Buendia is sponsoring a category and sharing his experiences of taking part in his blog.
Read all about it at brightonfoodphotography.com; and prepare to feel hungry from his mouthwatering shots.
