Brighton station unaware of concourse pub closure

Brighton station have been caught unawares by the closure of a pub in their own concourse.

The Cyclist refreshment room closed down on Saturday, with former staff members citing a lack of custom due to disruption on the southern rail network.

When contacted about the closure, staff at Brighton Station were unaware that the pub had even closed, and were unable to offer any information about what might replace it.

The Cyclist pub was one of several new businesses which opened when the station was refurbished in 2014. However, recent months have proved disastrous  for the business, with a lack of footfall eventually leading to its closure.

It is not the only station business to suffer; Oatopia, which sold flapjacks and porridge, shut their doors in December, with Anne Mathews stating at the time that the stikes had damaged the business.

“Our sales have dropped drastically since the dispute and we are very quiet on strike days. But we’ve also noticed people have changed their work patterns generally, so this all means less passing trade” she said.
