The Deep Blue Sea

New Venture Theatre are currently running an absolutely cracking production of Terence Rattigan’s devastating and quietly brutal masterpiece, The Deep Blue Sea. The story of Hester Collyer’s ill-judged affair with a feckless wartime fighter pilot, and the subsequent breakdown of her marriage to a high court judge is conveyed by a uniformly excellent cast with both aplomb and great subtlety. Performances are perfectly pitched, never tipping over into bathos or melodrama. It’s impossible not to be affected by Hester’s plight and the mental/emotional toxicity her affair has caused. This is a night out at the theatre that will live long in the memory. Congratulations to all those involved.
