Stage: Creative learning at the Theatre Royal Brighton

In an age when entertainment is never further than a key-stroke away, teaching the next generations about live performance has never been more important. How many times have you sat in a theatre and been frustrated by the presence of children who simply do not realise that live theatre does not have a pause facility or a rewind button? I know that we have. Now the Theatre Royal Brighton has announced its new Creative Learning programme for Spring/Summer 2017.

The Creative Learning programme is designed to open the doors of Theatre Royal Brighton to as many people in and around the city as possible. Running alongside the fabulous productions on stage at Theatre Royal Brighton there is a whole host of exciting, unusual and engaging events off stage that bring all sorts of people into the Theatre to watch, participate in and enjoy.

Skip’s Club is part of this programme and is a great way for children and families to find out more about theatre, make new friends, and share special experiences. Children do not have to be a member of Skip’s Club to participate in the events, but the Club is free to join and members get advance notice of the programme and occasional special offers.

We believe our theatre should be open to everyone

Skip’s Club runs an After School Club twice a month for 6 – 10 year olds. This term’s theme is favourite books and stories and each session includes drama, arts and crafts, games and a look on stage. Skip’s Club also runs monthly Family Workshops which are creative and inspiring sessions for adults and children to participate in together.

A new initiative for the Club is school holiday courses and sessions, starting with an exciting Puppet Making course for 8 – 10 year olds during the Easter break. Award winning company Herringbone Arts, creators of the sell-out hit shows A Winter’s Trail and Amongst the Stars at Theatre Royal Brighton, will be leading the course, teaching participants how to make their own marionette puppet and tips and techniques to bring it to life.

Jackie Alexander, Area Creative Learning Manager at the Theatre Royal Brighton, says: “Theatre Royal Brighton has been at the centre of Art, Culture and Performance in Brighton for over 200 years. We believe our theatre should be open to everyone in our community and our Creative Learning programme gives people an opportunity to get to know more about the theatre and have fun in our beautiful building.”

Skip’s After School Club dates: Wednesdays 5 & 19 April, 3 & 17 May, 7 & 21 June. Skip’s Club Family Workshops: Saturdays 29 April, 27 May, 24 June. Puppet Making with Herringbone Arts: Tuesday 11 & Wednesday 12 April.
