» Morals and decadent reporting

Andrew Kay is incensed by an approach from the ‘gutter’ press

I’m not sure that this is the space in which to be discussing morals, but then again, over the last few years I have somewhat drifted from discussing cushions and drapes to dietary dilemmas and parenting. Brave stuff for a confirmed bachelor you might think. Anyway here goes…

» Developing your garden for summer

Latest Interiors gives some advice on making the most of your outside space this summer

Nuthurst Garden Centre

Tropical rainstorms, gale force winds and chilly evenings: Admittedly, summer so far has been more miss than hit.

At the time of writing, Brighton has spent the day bathed in a (rather patchy) warm glow… so has the sun finally got his hat on? Just in case you’re tempted to venture into the garden (or yard, patio, balcony, square or even local park) this summer, Latest Interiors has a few ideas to keep you busy while you’re out there…

Quiet space

The great outdoors is perfect for reflection, meditation and daydreaming. Organise your space so that it has a place for rest and reflection: invest in a hammock, sun deck, hot-tub or swing seat, and feel the stress ease away.

» Damian Harris interview

Photographer Diana Frangi meets Skint Records co-founder Damian Harris

Damian Harris

God, isn’t Brighton just full of talent? My guest this week is Damian Harris, who, as the man behind Skint Records, has been creating some of the most exciting music of recent times – not surprising when you learn his first artiste was our local saint, FatBoy Slim.

If all that wasn’t enough, in his alter ego as DJ MIDFIELD GENERAL, whose new album General Disarray came out in April, he has put himself at the forefront of creative dance music, and has earned the soubriquet, ‘the supremo of big beat‘.

» Practical and fun designs for kids’ bedrooms

Emma and Nick, from the Velvet lifestyle and furniture stores, answer your design questions

Interior designI’ve just moved into a bigger property and need to buy some more furniture to fill it up, especially in the bedroom.
Lucy Adamson, Brighton

Emma says: I presume you already have your essentials like a bed and a wardrobe, so to fill up the space I would invest in items such as bedside tables and extra seating. One of our best selling ranges is dressing table sets, as not only are they practical but they also look stunning. With a stool and a mirror, they provide extra surface space; extra seating and the mirror will reflect light into the room.

There are so many styles to choose from, depending on what look you are after. Our Venetian Patterned Dressing Table (£225) would look stunning with its matching mirror and stool (pictured) or even set amongst more contemporary pieces.

» Vivacious villas

Building opinions with Robert Stuart Nemeth, the man with a keen eye on Brighton’s architecture

Osbourne Villas, Hove

As I write, I’m on the late train to work following a stressful move to my new home on Osborne Villas in Hove.

I bought my first house, in Hangleton, about eight years ago and although I have happy memories of the area, its 1950s architecture simply didn’t go hand-inhand with my interest in Regency, Victorian and Art Deco buildings.

“Cliftonville’s fine houses were largely influenced by Osborne House on the Isle of Wight”

For some time I’ve been on the lookout for something manageable with ‘a bit of character’. Osborne Villas offers reasonably sized pairs of early Victorian villas which fit the bill perfectly. The road was built in the 1840s as part of an area known as Cliftonville.

» Conservationist Meg Stone

Meg Stone, local conservationist, tells us about a personal discovery…

Meg StoneAt the Brighton Station car boot, I recently found a lovely old postcard of our seafront. It depicts a serene Victorian summer’s day, so noted by the flowers in bloom and the attire of the strolling parasols.

Kings Road is largely quiet with only a few carriages gliding by and the bathing stations neatly lined up look to all be in use. There are lovely green manicured lawns on the seafront surrounding the Birdcage bandstand and most ladies on foot appear to be heading in that direction.

» Dogs and car sickness

The Paul O’Grady Show’s Marc Abraham explains how to get your canine used to car journeys

Dog with a seatbeltOne doggy question asked loads by concerned clients these days is “My dog hates going in our car, yet we’d love to take him with us now that the good weather’s arrived. How can I stop him hating the car and treat his car-sickness?”

Now it could simply be that he’s just sick because of his actual fear of cars. Like with humans, vomiting can well be a reaction to fear, and most dogs simply don’t understand the purpose of the car – the big smelly tin box which shakes and bumps along.

“Once your dog associates the car with pleasure, not fear, you will have conquered the problem“

I often wonder what they must be thinking. Like most people, dogs are frightened of what they don’t know. I mentioned smell because a dog has a far greater sense of smell than us humans.

» The chickenpox party

Malone finds herself popular at parties where she is itching to have her cake and eat it

My child has chickenpox, it looks like acne. My first worry was that I’d have to stay in for ten days quarantine going crazy with the itching toddler.

But no! People want me even more! I even got invited round to one family’s house with the main intention to infect their children with ‘the pox’. Thank god there will be some kids my toddler can hang out with! Gutted we will miss out on two birthday parties this week.

“No wonder chavs give their kids Coca-Cola in their bottle; the power of sugar is truly wonderful for at least 17 and a half minutes”

Kids’ parties mean one thing and one thing only in my eyes, cake. Pink cake, yellow cake, and brown cake. You have to get in there before all the kids do, load up a few child-size portions to make a decent adult portion of cake and then make sure you go back for seconds making out it’s for your child.

» The price of friendship

The Landlady

I don’t often keep in touch with people who are ex-lodgers at Landlady Towers. There are a couple of ex-tenants who regularly turn up at my parties and it’s always nice to see them and find out how their lives are progressing – or not, as the case may be.

“We got chatting about cookery; it transpired he was a huge fan of Jamie Oliver and was desperate to get his hands on a copy of Jamie at Home”

One of my German lodgers kept in touch with me by email for about six months, that is, until I’d supplied her with just about all my recipes and I never heard from her again. I also receive a regular e-Christmas card from a French horse dentist who only stayed with me for two nights about five years ago. I can barely remember whether this person is male or female, let alone what they looked like.
