Eat to rule

Strange things are happening with meal times at Landlady Towers. In spite of the fact that all of my lodgers know that I serve dinner in some shape or form at 7.30pm every evening, none of them ever appears to eat it when it is actually ready. The Italian, who has been here for two weeks and leaves this Saturday, has not eaten a single meal at LT, as far as I‘m aware, unless he‘s eating it after midnight. I know The Italians are generally supposed to eat late, but that’s ridiculous. In the two weeks that he’s been here, I haven’t actually seen him once, which is fabulous. I think he avoids me as much as I avoid him, which is as it should be. If only all the other lodgers were the same.

» The home front

Building opinions Robert Stuart Nemeth
The man with a keen eye on our area’s architecture

Several months ago, I wrote about my new home on Osborne Villas. The plan was to live there at least until I had a proper plan in place for my next step.

The place was bought as a damp, badly carved-up wreck and proper renovation was always going to be expensive. It was a toss-up between a simple paint-job (with a view to retention and a quick jump on to the next project) and complete refurbishment. I lasted one week before snapping one evening and ripping out all of the carpets and, shortly afterwards, all of the plasterboard walls. The following weekend, having removed the bathroom and kitchen too, I had to move back out.

» All I want for Christmas

Latest Interiors draws up a wishlist for the kitchen, from Porsche toasters to cookie cutters

We’ve held out as long as we could, (remarkably well, as it happens) but even the most miserly scrooge must by now be forced to admit that Christmas is coming. This year we have a bit less money and a few more worries than last, so Latest Interiors is happy to take upon ourselves the task of spreading some extra value glitter on your seasonal shopping plans. Marc Abraham on how you can spoil your pets at Christmas – just don’t think about dressing them up as elves

Christmas is exactly a month away and we’re all planning who’s getting what present, desperately trying not to leave anyone, or anything, out. » Foxy Mama Malone

Malone is thinking that we all need to reach out and support each other in these challenging times

Is it me or is everyone miserable at the moment? It’s like everyone has got that January feeling and it’s only November. Everyone seems depleted of hope. I guess summer is a long way away, and summers these days aren’t much to wait for anyway, are they?

Andrew Kay gets a taste of the high life
in Amsterdam

It’s been a while since I did it but for many years I enjoyed holidays alone. It all started back in the 1980s when I went on a holiday with friends that escalated into a tourist disaster. Simply too many people in too small a villa. One character, a vegetarian and a very demanding one, claimed that I had given her a gippy tummy with my cooking, but to be frank she was dashing to the ladies before the charter flight had lifted off from Gatwick.

After that debacle I chose to holiday alone for several years. You do as much or as little as you want to do and you do it when you want to do it. If it sounds selfish then so be it, it works for me.

Boston tea party

Although I’ve already done a small amount of Christmas shopping on t’internet, I intend to do the majority this week in Boston. Yes, my feet have only just returned to terra firma after my recent Middle East trip and I’m already off yet again, only this time travelling in the opposite direction to where it is cold. Minus two degrees according to the BBC website. This is not good news to a person who’s just returned from temperatures approaching 40 degrees.
