» Brighton College: Top marks

Brighton College continues to be a leading educational light in the county and the first choice for parents with an eye to success

With recent school closures and news of staffing cuts, many parents may be concerned about the future of independent education. However, the county’s premier school continues a massive investment programme in new and improved facilities – made possible by strong management, an international reputation for excellence and a rising school roll. So-called ‘white‘ goods – refrigerators, cookers, washing machines and the like – are among the biggest purchases that householders make. And in the current economic climate, householders (that‘s us) want the biggest – and best-looking – bang for our buck. » Mama Malone

Malone on wearing miniskirts at any age, and a chavvy hospital family

At what age should men stop wearing baseball caps? Women are told miniskirts look wrong after a certain age, well, so do baseball caps on men over 40. Except 60-year-old men wearing Yankee caps at a ‘ball game‘, that‘s cute. Like old women who draw in their eyebrows with the wrong colour kohl. I love old women on the bus who wear red lipstick, that‘s two fingers up at old age, isn‘t it!

» Distracted Dad

Richard Hearn ponders the nature of multi-tasking and yearns for more sleep-time

The Boy is a natural at multi-tasking. This is not necessarily a good thing. Some examples: he fills the gap between finishing cornflakes and the arrival of Cheerios (he has one after the other – serial cereal, if you will) by hopping out of his seat to do a quick Dalek impression. He does this every morning at this time, and no other time. ‘Exterminate‘, etc. An easy script to remember, and he executes it flawlessly.

» Kay Town

Andrew Kay takes the kicks and turns them to his advantage

It never rains… I have just spent a few days in which I felt that my entire being had been compromised. My patience and tolerance have been tested to the nth degree, I ran out of milk, found that the odd socks have been breeding and the frayed ends of the last few years have been drawn into a ragged and acrimonious knot.

» The Landlady

The landlady finds that baby wipes and violence go together at the Jobcentre

The Big Daughter and I went to the Jobcentre last week. Without my suggesting such an outing, the Big Daughter might well have become welded to the sofa and stayed there ‘til her mid-forties. Not only does she have no job, but she has never even claimed a penny of jobseeker‘s allowance and for the past two years has managed to eke out her rather sporadic baby-sitting money for weeks on end.

» Building Opinions: Bottoms up!

Robert Stuart Nemeth The man with a keen eye on our area’s architecture

Rock Brewery – smashed apart, Anchor Brewery – dropped to the ground, Phoenix Brewery – unlikely to be rising from the rubble; the long list of the great breweries of Brighton, Hove and Portslade is a series of obituaries.

Now entering its 30th year, hbc for bathrooms (Hove Bathroom Centre Ltd) is a designer, retailer and installer of quality bathrooms in the Brighton and Hove area.

Established in 1979, the showroom was one of the first bathroom showrooms to be opened in the area and started with just a couple of simple Armitage Shanks displays. As the range and styles of these goods increased and the customers awareness of them grew, so hbc has grown its showroom with them.
