Building opinions Robert Stuart Nemeth
The man with a keen eye on our area’s architecture

Almost every week, there’s breaking news relating to the King Alfred project, and frankly, it has been hard to keep up. Now the development in its Gehry incarnation has finally died, there really is a discussion to be had – and I have strong views on what should happen next.

Explore Living’s affordable housing and regeneration proposal for Brighton Marina

Plans to regenerate the Royal Sussex County Hospital will not only significantly increase its size but also its employee quota. This is great news for the job market, but the council’s housing office may wonder where it will find the much needed affordable housing to cater for this influx of doctors and nurses.

Bathtimes was started by childhood friends Paul and Jeff. Building opinions Robert Stuart Nemeth The man with a keen eye on our area’s architecture

Waterloo Street was named after the Battle of Waterloo that still would have been fresh in people’s minds when the road was laid out prior to 1825 as part of Brunswick town.

Number 54 was once the home of the Robins family including Mike Robins, Brighton and Hove’s much-loved tour guide and former custodian of St Andrew’s Church. On one of his tours, Mike once pointed out to me the tombstone in St Nicholas Churchyard of Ebenezer Robins, who founded his successful brewing business in about 1820.

» Marc the Vet

Marc Abraham wishes you all a happy Christmas, with a warning to watch out for festive dangers to our pets

In my last column of the year I urge you all to please consider how your festive celebrations may affect your pets, so we can all enjoy a safe and happy Christmas and New Year together.

Will your Christmas be spent at home or away? Leaving your pets at home will require the help of a responsible (and sober) friend or neighbour to visit, feed and care for them. Don’t forget that seasonal plants such as holly, poinsettia, ivy and mistletoe are all extremely toxic, so please think very carefully when you’re busy decking your halls.

» Foxy Mamma Malone

Malone’s clinging onto precious time to herself as her child’s father let’s her down once again

My daughter’s father sees her one weekend a month and right this second we are having a text row about how he needs to be at work one of these days. My viewpoint is that he only sees her once a month (to be fair, he only has one weekend off a month) and that he is dedicated enough to his job already, surely?

I said he needs to prioritise his child over work. This hasn’t gone down well. Well, what hasn’t gone down well is mentioning that it would upset his two-year-old. He is banding about the phrase: ‘emotional guilt trip’, which I totally disagree with. Surely I am just stating the truth? It does upset her. What am I supposed to do, not tell him the truth? He doesn’t get to see what happens, he’s not here to see how his absence affects her. Does he think I would make it up to make him feel bad? Or he’d rather I’d not tell him? Treat him like a child? Mother them both?

Emma and Nick, from the Velvet lifestyle and furniture stores, answer your design questions

My husband and I are celebrating our first Christmas together – and all the family are coming for dinner. Yikes! Could you recommend some credit crunch friendly ways for me to decorate the dining table?
Mrs. Tyler, Brighton

Emma says: Decorating the house at this time of year is one of my favourite things. Here are a few ideas to make your dining table look amazing on a limited budget. Decide on a colour theme and stick to it. Firstly candles are a very cheap way to transform a room because of the ambience they create. Use them on the table with gorgeous candlesticks (£25). For a centre piece why not fill a tall vase or bowl with baubles (from £1). You can also extend this idea around the house by having vases or bowls full of brightly wrapped sweets. Lastly, ribbon (from 55p per metre) is just perfect for a cheap version of napkin holders, just tie a bow around each one and voila!

» Chez Kay

Andrew Kay is so very, very tired that
he ponders his Christmas break

You know, I‘m tired. It‘s been a long year and lots has happened. LOTS. I can hardly believe that it‘s December already. I can‘t believe that I am organising Christmas parties, writing lists, talking to Paul the butcher at Brampton‘s about my meat order for the big day and quizzing my brother about what my nephews might like. The guilt calls have already started from Mum too but I know that she has already accepted an invitation from friends for Christmas lunch so I‘m not falling for that one.
