Kay Town

Andrew Kay is wondering whether to live a TV free life or give in to the box

To see or not to see? That is the question. Whether tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of my mates who do have television, while as yet I have none, or give in and buy a telly.

Trust me, this is no pious decision to rid my life of the evil box, far from it. I simply haven’t got round to sorting one out since my move. Although to be fair, as yet, I am far from missing it.

Gone is the temptation to slip home and slump. I now fill my life with other kinds of trivia, online Scrabble, or Lexulous as I now have to call it. And I have returned to getting home and cooking, after two years of culinary lethargy.

The flat looks good without a telly. It has a grown-up air about it. Although I do suspect I could end up wearing cravats and corduroy and posturing at the window, sherry in hand while spouting nonsense about how I have little time in my busy existence for television.

It would be such a lie. Hardly a moment goes by in which I am not wondering about the fictional world that has dominated my life for nearly half a century. I wake sweating, wondering what setbacks have befallen my beloved occupants of the most celebrated street in TV history.

“I miss every mad, ‘Ee bah gum‘, tooth sucking, trouble at’ mill, clog sparking breath of it”

Yes, you guessed it. I miss Coronation Street. I miss every mad, ‘Ee bah gum‘, tooth sucking, trouble at’ mill, clog sparking breath of it. I know I can catch up on the world wide web, but it isn’t the same. Corrie has for so long been the punctuation marks of my existence, the essence that keeps me Northern and the fuel that fires my belief in public entertainment.

You can keep the rest, but life without Weatherfield is a sadder place by far. How is Emily? Did Tyrone get married? Will Lloyd see the error of his ways and realise that Steve is right and that any sort of relations with Liz are totally unsuitable, even unsavoury? For that matter, has anyone tamed
Steve McDonald’s delicious eyebrows?

No, the question is not to see or not to see. It is simply where and when will I finally sort out the telly situation and restore my lifeline to my spiritual home?
