Latest Interiors: Perfect Fit

Latest Interiors packs everything away in the finest bedroom storage units

Storage space is always at a premium, and bedrooms are no exception. A bedroom should be somewhere to switch off, unwind, sleep – and clutter is the last thing you need. Do socks all over the floor, clothes bulging out of drawers, and piles of books and magazines all around sound familiar? Then perhaps you should consider a fitted bedroom… no, not some 70s plastic horror: modern bedrooms are sleek, sophisticated and very, very clever.

Put it away
Fitted bedrooms are the perfect solution when space is tight, or rooms are an awkward shape. A well-planned bedroom will optimise available space and give you the right combination of long and shorter term storage (for winter and summer clothes, for example), as well as task and display space. This could include wardrobe space, under-bed storage (pull-out drawers, or a bespoke bed with integrated storage), bedside units (low-level and chic), and shelving for books, candles and photos.

Hang it up
To maximise space and keep clothes looking good, nothing beats a well-designed, fitted wardrobe. Whether you go bespoke or buy off-the-peg modular units, a fitted system should integrate itself (or ‘disappear’) into the room, providing as much storage space (preferably floor-to-ceiling) as possible. Glass, lacquered or laminate doors will give a light, modern finish. If space is limited, consider sliding doors.

Fitted systems are also more flexible than smaller, free-standing units: You can opt for different storage modules to suit your needs, combining full and half-length hanging space, shelves, and shoe-storage (men tend to need more shelf space, and women more hanging space, for some reason). Be prepared to pay for quality: What lies beneath (silent door mechanisms, self closing drawers) is what makes these units special, and costs money. Good off-the-peg systems start at around £1,000, expect to pay upwards of £2,000 for a large bespoke system or (bliss) walk-in wardrobe or dressing room. A high quality finish is vital to integrate the units into your room, so don’t be tempted to DIY unless you’re already a professional.

Once you have your perfect bedroom, try not to fill the space too quickly: be ruthless with clutter and un-worn clothes, and prune your collection regularly. Accessorise your lovely bed with cushions and a throw or two, lie back, and admire. You might even want to invite a friend…
