Latest Interiors: Rugs

Latest Interiors adds some warmth to the home with this season’s hottest rugs

Brighten up winter floors with a colourful, cosy rug. Rugs are a quick fashion fix for rooms in need of an update, but the right rug will also change the feel of your living space. As winter draws in and the days get shorter, Latest Interiors is checking out what the most best-dressed floors are wearing this season.

Winter colour
Rich, warm colours are perfect for winter: jewel tones of ruby red or amethyst purple, forest green and amber will help to warm cold living areas. For more light, add a plain, pale-coloured rug. For a total change of look, opt for a modern, bold pattern or print. Central or large-scale abstract and floral patterns in bright colours or classic monochrome are key trends at the moment. Statement rugs work well as centre pieces, but if you’re positioning a rug underneath a table or other furniture, choose a border pattern instead. If your taste is more traditional, or you prefer an eclectic look, a vintage-style in soft, faded tones will add well-worn charm to your sitting room. Scan local markets and second-hand shops for a well-worn classic Oriental or Aubusson rug in wool or silk.

Feeling soft
Textured rugs and accessories add warmth and contrast to living space. This season, we love soft, felted-wool rugs and fluffy sheepskin. In fact, animal-skin rugs are a huge trend this year, although they aren’t for everyone. Some people are fine with rugs that are by-products of meat production such as sheepskin or cow-hide, or with vintage animal-skin rugs like a fluffy white ’70s goat-skin. If the real thing is a bit too real for you, there are some fabulous fluffy fake furs and animal print rugs around. Add a fabulous leopard or zebra print rug for some retro chic: the bolder, the better.
Look out also for shag-pile, brushed wool, boucle matting, silk, leather and other natural fibres such as sisal or bamboo for textured rugs and runners. And tread softly…
