We spend more than a third of our lives asleep, and quality sleep is vital to our health and wellbeing. According to Patient UK (www.patient.co.uk), one in five of us regularly have difficulty sleeping – and most people will experience some form of sleep problem at some point in their lives. A good quality bed can make all the difference between sweet dreams and a sleepless night. This week, Latest Interiors has a nice lie down.
Size matters
The bigger your bed, the more space you have to spread out – especially if you share it with someone. Choose the biggest bed that your bedroom can accommodate, and free up space by opting for sleek, concealed storage, and keep clutter and clothing at bay.
The type of bed frame or structure you choose will also impact on how it feels to sleep in: a sprung base gives you and your mattress more support than simple slats – ideal if you like a firm bed. On the other hand, lower-level, metal or wood frames with slatted bases give a lighter, more modern look – choose the best mattress you can afford. Solid wood or metal beds will last longer than veneered or upholstered ones, although an upholstered headboard (with a removable, washable cover) will be more comfortable than wood.
Sleeping softly
Low-level, solid wood beds are simple and chic. Traditional and romantic, metal bed frames are also still in vogue. For a statement piece choose a modern four-poster or canopy bed, and make it the central focus of your bedroom.
As with the bed, it’s worth investing in quality duvets, pillows and bedding. Duvets and pillows filled with natural fibres – feathers or down – are hardwearing, soft, light, and they let your skin breathe. They may be heavier than synthetic fillings, though. Mattress protectors and toppers will prolong the life of your bed, and add an extra layer of cushioning.
Finish it off with crisp, fresh linen and sumptuous accessories. Good quality Egyptian cotton and pure Irish linen in white or cream are timeless, stylish and natural. Rougher-textured linen and soft wool in shades of biscuit, stone, midnight blue, chocolate and off-black add colour and depth. For the finishing touch, accessorise your bed with silver, indigo or ecru throws in silk or satin, sequin and velvet. It’s definitely time for bed.
