Richard Hearn on the perils of surprise presents

Now my wife’s birthday has passed, I can tell the story of getting her some personalised jewellery. Be warned, I’ll be using exclamation marks to heighten the drama! I wanted to get a bracelet with imprints of our boys’ fingerprints. I ordered the impression pack online, 29 days before her birthday. Read the rest of this article »

Richard Hearn on a messy culinary adventure

Let me give you an insight into lunch out with Youngest™. Beware, I’m going into almost slow-motion detail. Like a Booker Prize winner, but without the writing quality. Read the rest of this article »

Richard Hearn makes the case for local libraries

I still find it a thrill to walk into a library. This sentence, to many people, is probably absurd, but I instead get bored by rollercoasters and flashing lights. As a kid, my mum took me to the library regularly and it was always a treat. You were allowed to take three books out. Read the rest of this article »

Richard Hearn puts one foot in front of the other

It was my wife’s idea. Join a running class. I think she’s hinting at something. It’s a six-week class ending in a 10k run. I tentatively said I was considering it, and next thing I’m getting a phone call from the trainer. He says to get there early on the first Sunday so he can ‘see my running technique’. Richard Hearn has a day out at the animal house

I promised my wife I’d take the kids out the house so she could get some jobs done, so last weekend we went to see some giraffes. These are The Boy’s favourite animals, he’s recently informed me. No, we didn’t go to Africa, but we did go to Hampshire, which was far enough. Read the rest of this article »

Richard Hearn is choosy at meal times

I’m not sure I have a healthy relationship with food. Someone pointed out today how much thought I was putting into my lunch choice, and I thought, doesn’t everyone always think that way? Who doesn’t agonise over every meal? I treat every meal as if it’s going to be my last. A Death Row meal. Read the rest of this article »

Richard Hearn is under an electronic attack

Youngest™ is a control freak. He loves the TV remote control, and freaks out if he can’t have it. The Boy was the same at this age (15 months); he was equally obsessed. He could sense a piece of electronic equipment mistakenly put within reach like a shark can smell a drop of blood in the next ocean. Read the rest of this article »

Richard Hearn on ‘When Food Comes Becomes Play’

“Coin,” says The Boy “is my second favourite type of chocolate.” “What’s your favourite then?” “Chocolate orange.” He mentions a friend’s name. “It’s her favourite invention.” He’s certainly put a bit of thought into it, and it sounds like his friends have too. Read the rest of this article »

Richard Hearn finds car journeys are not a great hit

I may as well write about our journey up to Cumbria to visit my wife’s parents. We’ve done the trip of 371 miles, with and without children (I recommend without) but we’ve never done it with Youngest™. Or during the snow. Read the rest of this article »

Richard Hearn on the past, present & future

This week: a journey through time. I’m writing this mid December. You’re reading this in January. This passing of short amounts of time could be as mundane as 28 days delivery or milk going off – but time-straddling Christmas makes it more significant. Read the rest of this article »
