Heron Estates recreate the classic charm of a 1930s villa

The name Varndean has had massive appeal in property circles for many years. It breathes calm, quiet and quality – and it also smacks of excellent education opportunities too. But this exceptional family home has so much more going for it.

» Dream home: The Nurseries in Lewes

Contemporary living at The Nurseries in Lewes from Blue Sonic

Life in Lewes isn’t all real ale, morris dancing and fireworks. These days the county town has taken on a sophisticated new mantle and this is clearly expressed at The Nurseries, a small, new development of modern family homes with a difference.

I met developer Andrew Newton for a guided tour and to find out exactly what he has done to make this project that bit more special. First impressions in the property business can make all the difference and the first thing I notice is how clean and tidy the development is. Andrew is quick to explain why. ‘‘The houses, although designed by my team here in the UK, are constructed in Germany and arrive almost finished. The foundations are prepared in advance and on the day the walls are raised into position, secured and the roof fitted.

Within 24 hours the building is secure and weather-tight, the windows in place and all to a very exacting standard.’’ I have to admit that on close inspection the finish is immaculate. “We also needed only one labourer on site for the entire build whereas a conventional build might require six on a project this size.”

It’s all impressive as a concept, but how do they match up as homes?

Sumptuous detached luxury with a taste of Provençe

Dream home

What makes a home a dream home? Is it size, luxury, location, land? Well it can be any number of things but seldom is it all of them. This week however we visit a home that has ticked perhaps more than the usual number of boxes.

This large, gleaming-white, detached property is on Hill Brow, one of the most desirable addresses just west of Dyke Road Avenue. The house is ideally located for access both in and out of the city with major routes just a short drive away and regular public transport services. Both local and major retail parks are within easy reach.

» Dream Home at The Gallery, Hove

Contemporary living with modern values at The Gallery in the heart of Hove

Few cities have as many opportunities to live in the heart of things as Brighton and Hove does. This has always been a desirable place to live and the high number of beautiful domestic buildings in the city centre is evidence of this. In recent years, demand for private homes has grown even stronger, with more and more people moving to the city, choosing the exciting coastal lifestyle above other, perhaps more urban, alternatives. It is certainly true that the city offers some of the most sophisticated living to be found in the UK, with excellent shopping, entertainment and nightlife, plus of course the sea, the beach and miles of surrounding downland.

That is why a new development will always attract masses of attention, and why the creators of it will need to make sure that as a development, it offers the very best standards across the board. The Gallery certainly ticks all the boxes.

Inside the home of property developer Ed Deedman

When a property comes on the market that has been created by a property developer and expert builder to live in himself, you might expect a high level of finish. That is exactly what you get in this stylish three bedroom apartment close to fashionable Seven Dials.

Owner Ed Deedman has completely refurbished and quite simply re-invented the upper floor space in this large late Victorian property, and the effect is impressive. A modern family home in Saltdean that raises the benchmark

016_LH347_davidwebb_5.jpg
I watched this house being built. It’s one of a pair sitting on a plot of land close to the sea and near to where I live in Saltdean. The project drew a lot of attention locally as the houses were clearly going to be rather large. Read the rest of this article »

We can all help to change the world when Gladstone Row eco-homes do it so stylishly

018_LH346_mishon_DH_1.jpg
It may have been a long time coming but the development of the New England Quarter, formerly the site of Brighton Station’s sidings, has risen phoenix-like from the wasteland of so many years. Offices, colleges, retail and smart new hotels have emerged in this abandoned swathe of prime Brighton land and breathed new life into the area that has got the city talking. In amongst all this there are intimate areas of exciting residential property and this week’s dream home is no exception.
