Window dressings can change with the seasons: light, translucent summer voiles can easily be replaced by something warm and luxurious for the winter months. Shut out the dark – and keep the warmth in – with some winter window dressings.
Choosing perfect curtains
Winter curtains can use richer, darker fabrics than those used in summer months. Living rooms often need draught-excluding fabrics, and having curtains lined will help the room retain heat, too. Bedrooms benefit from black-out linings, although you will appreciate these more in the summer months.
Opt for a colour and pattern that tones or contrasts with sofas or walls – matching up can make the room seem too busy. You can use excess fabric for a few cushions or a small throw, though. Choose curtain rails that are a little wider than the window, so that you can pull them all the way back and don’t lose precious sunlight during the day.
Eyelet and tab-top curtains are the simplest to fit and well-suited to modern interiors. Simple, metal rods and finials give a clean finish. However, these types of curtains don’t work so well in Brighton’s regency bay windows. In awkward spaces, nothing will fit better than proper, bespoke curtain rails (front-pleated curtains give a traditional look) – many big department stores offer a free advice service for curtains.

Winter style
This season, choose rich chocolate or plum velvet, or black and grey satin, for a luxe feel. Damask prints are also in vogue, lending an opulent feel to living space. Add detail with tie-backs; we love traditional rope and tassels, but you can also accessorise with beads, feather trim, ribbon – whatever fits your mood, and the season. We also love pom-pom trim and ribbon for the bottom of curtains (although cats also seem to love this, you have been warned!). The right curtains will keep you warm and turn your windows into a winter work of art. Simply pull them close, and enjoy.
