Brighton College encourages students to work hard and pursue their personal interests for a rounded education

Many teenagers look for a different place of study for the sixth form. For some, it is to go from a single sex school to a co-educational environment. For others, it is simply to find a course of study not found at their current place of learning.

Whatever the reasons, many find their way to Brighton College, the most successful co-educational school not only in Sussex, but in the whole country.

This year’s A-level results broke new records, with over 95 per cent A and B grades; 18 students secured places at Oxford and Cambridge; many others went on to study medicine, dentistry or veterinary science at prestigious institutions, while six won places at top art colleges. The overwhelming majority will head to Russell Group universities.

Aside from studies, Brighton College is also a school that understands the need for students to enjoy a rich and exciting range of activities alongside their studies. No two boys or girls are the same and there is no such thing as a typical Brightonian, although they do share a mutual respect for one another and encourage one another in their different pursuits.

“Brighton College gives students the right balance of guidance and independence”

Some students are musical and get involved in a variety of bands, orchestras, choirs and ensembles or simply learn an instrument for their own pleasure. The new Alexander Visual Arts Centre, Dance Studio, Montague Theatre and Burstow Gallery provide the perfect setting for creativity and performance, while others take advantage of a first-class group of sports coaches. The range and quality of sport at Brighton College is unrivalled in the South East: cricket, rugby, football, netball, hockey, tennis, squash, swimming, rounders, sailing, horse riding, athletics, fencing, golf and water polo are all taught to high standards and using superb facilities.

Many sixth formers travel from across Sussex to attend Brighton College but plenty more actually board, whether on a weekly or full-time basis. The boarding community is bigger than at any time since 1931 with many students choosing this option so they can enjoy all the facilities of the extensive campus during and after school hours. A new girls’ boarding house was opened this term, while the other three houses were refurbished in a £1 million programme.

The Starkey Sixth Form Centre allows students additional space for study as well as comfortable relaxation areas and a dedicated careers centre. The Dimbleby Lecture Room is the perfect location for visiting speakers to share their wisdom. Every assistance is given with applications for further study, especially advice on selecting the most appropriate courses.

Brighton College gives students the right balance of guidance and independence, helping them achieve the best possible results in their exams but also laying the ground for life after school. It is a school that gets the best out of the boys and girls who walk through its gates and provides a rounded education. It is an approach that clearly works and applications for the school have never been higher. Perhaps that is why so many commentators in the education world heap praise on the school, and hold it up as an example to others.

A sixth form open morning will be held on Saturday 14 November from 9.30am–noon, followed by lunch. All families are welcome to attend but should register their interest by calling 01273 704201/2 as space is limited.
