Cold weather and a still-chilly economy makes us just want to snuggle up on the sofa. Are you sitting comfortably? This week, Latest Interiors looks into some seriously stylish sofas and chairs.

Shape & style

For a clean, modern look that doesn’t compromise on comfort, opt for low levels and simple lines. Natural fabrics and textiles – cotton, tweed, linen or vintage leather – in soft, neutral tones go hand-in-hand with greener lifestyles. To make a statement opt for one out-sized sofa or day-bed, in black, scarlet, blue or a bright, contemporary print. For a softer finish, break up harsh lines with cushions and throws in natural fabrics. If you’re buying new, don’t forget to try sofas and chairs out first (choose a Saturday afternoon when you’ve been on your feet a while), and buy a spare set of covers if you can.

Modular corner units are perfect for big, open-plan spaces, as they effectively let you custom-build your own sofa. Many units incorporate hidden storage, too. The larger, L-shaped modular sofas really need a contemporary, out-sized room – they don’t fit or work so well in smaller, period properties.

Traditional Chesterfields and other period armchair and sofa styles are also great, being comfortable, welcoming and vintage-chic. Opt for beaten-up leather, velvet or an old-school liberty print; many of the big high-street names have traditional style sofas in up-to-date finishes. Even better, you could track down an original and have it re-covered. When buying vintage, check carefully before parting with any cash as you may find that saggy seat cushions need replacing.

Key trends

This season, home is where the heart is. Plump, inviting sofas and soft, welcoming armchairs will make you feel good about staying in. Large, statement sofas, daybeds and love-seats are all good; don’t feel you have to match pieces precisely, as Brighton is still big on that homey, eclectic look. Add satin or fake-fur throws to keep the winter chills away, and plenty of cushions. We’ll wake you up when it’s summer…
