That Conran touch

Iconic design and architecture company Conran & Partners opens a Brighton office

Conran

Conran and Partners is the architecture and interiors company led by Sir Terence Conran. It has had offices in London for decades, but this year branched out and opened up here in Brighton. Headed by Director Paul Zara and Associate Director Lee Davies, they decided to open a Brighton office for several reasons.

The company was already engaged in projects in the area having worked on the Argus Lofts building in the North Laine, that created warehouse apartments and large penthouses above shops, offices and Wagamama’s restaurant.

They are responsible for the Brighton Festival Fringe basement theatre space and the restoration of Embassy Court, the wonderful modernist seafront block right on the Brighton/Hove border.

They are also working on houses in the Sussex countryside for private clients and social housing schemes with Hove based Downland Housing Association. With its architecture schools and its close proximity to London, Brighton is brimming with talented architects. C&P recognised this resource and decided to tap into it.

Paul Zara comments: “We advertised last year and had a great response, from people with all levels of experience. We quickly managed to build a team of ten, set up a studio in Hanover House, on Queens Road, with space to expand to over twenty.

We offer our staff the opportunity to work on local, national and international projects and we offer our clients the benefit of our experience from a broad range of sectors, including residential projects, restaurants, shops, offices, hotels, and master planning.

“We work with clients from Brighton and Hove and around Sussex as well as being involved with projects across the UK and overseas in countries including Cuba, Japan and the city of Kuala Lumpur. It’s an interesting mix.”

Conran and Partners has also made a deliberate effort to integrate with the local design community, being active members of the South Coast Design Forum, Arts and Business, and All Ways Learning.

They have held events in their studio as part of Architecture ‘08, including the recent photographic competition ‘Capture the City’, where they had nearly 200 entries.

Lee Davies notes: “We are happy to work with clients who want a good-quality building or interior. We like to think we offer a friendly professional service and can bring fresh and innovative thinking to any client brief.”
