Wired Sussex: Digital Age

Wired Sussex offer recent university graduates a head start in digital media

Are you looking to start a career in media? Wired Sussex, the independent membership organisation for digital media businesses in Sussex, are expanding their successful work-based training scheme for graduates – the Sussex Internship Programme – in a project led by the University of Sussex.

If you’re about to graduate or graduated last year from any university, kick-start a career in the media through an internship at one of Sussex’s most exciting games, web, mobile, software, animation, TV, music, film or advertising companies. Simply register your details at wiredsussex.com/internships and you’ll be contacted with details when the internships are advertised in July.

How does the scheme work? The Sussex Internship Programme provides 100 six-week internships at media companies across Sussex. Interns get a 30-day, grant-supported placement at a media company, a genuine project-based internship giving them the chance to learn on the job, additional professional skills training and access to advice from top industry professionals.

“We expect the programme to be very popular with companies and interns”

The scheme has been successfully piloted by Wired Sussex over the past two years with support from Brighton and Hove City Council. 40 per cent of those who obtained an internship in the pilot schemes went on to be offered employment with participating companies. It is no wonder that the scheme is now nationally recognised as the most successful of its kind.

Managing director of Wired Sussex, Phil Jones, said: ”We’re delighted to be working with the University of Sussex to deliver such an innovative scheme. We know graduates want to receive really useful training and practical experience via their placements, so these internships are carefully monitored by us. Every intern will receive additional training which will really set him or her up for a career in the sector. We expect the programme to be very popular with companies and interns alike.”

The project reflects growing concern at local and national government levels about graduate unemployment in the current challenging economic times. Unlike recent schemes which have provided for internships in large companies or involve companies paying the interns themselves, the Sussex Internship Programme is designed to meet the needs of smaller creative businesses, where a 30-day, funded internship with a recently trained graduate could have a significant impact.

Interested businesses from the sector within Sussex should also register their details at wiredsussex.com/internships to find out more.
