A storm rages; a child is born; an ancient secret uncovered on a Norfolk beach; and somewhere, an army of trees begin to march…

How is it that trees have such emotional pull for us? Join Christine as she weaves a darkly beautiful web of tangled trees reaching from prehistory to today; at its centre, the medieval Welsh poem that inspired Tolkein and Shakespeare. Fragments of folklore, history and poetry are recycled into a haunting evening of contemporary and very personal storytelling, as Christine explores the ways our lives connect with these giant beings. With live music.

“the weekend’s standout… impossible to top” Leslie Berman, New York Times

Christine Cooper comes from wild West Wales, where the sea eats the land inch by inch. She collects dusty old fragments of folklore, poetry, myth and song, and painstakingly pieces them together, making new work out of the broken remains of times past. Christine has toured internationally as both a storyteller and musician, and has won awards for her quietly beautiful folk music.

Clowns

“Featuring members of Brakes [sic], The Poppycocks and Restlesslist, Clowns are without a doubt one of Brighton’s finest live bands, turning wherever they play into a sweaty, heaving mass. Oh and they rock like one mean bastard. For the uninitiated among you, expect peculiar and twisted tales set to dirty garage rock riffs, combining the rockabilly swagger of the Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster with the pop sensibilities of early Squeeze. Disturbing yet darkly playful, if you haven’t had the live experience before then where the hell have you been? Prepare to be well and truly clowned.” – BRIGHTON SOURCE

Deadbeat Descendant

This great band breathes garage rock and blues its sounds are high tempo and full of attack. If we had to imagine they were spawned from 2 bands it would be the stones and the stooges with the frontman being full of all the swagger, talent and charisma of the fore mentioned bands iconic vocalist.

The Witches

The Witches are a Dark/Surf/Grunge band lurking through the depths of the British underground music scene, The Witches bring together an unhealthy blend of darkness and surf and we like them very much.

The Rusted Guns

Two-Piece Garage/Blues band from Brighton they ripped our ears off when we heard them last time and they are growing bigger with every gig. Raw, dirty and full of energy and we are really looking forward to it.

Birdengine

Birdengine is the musical project of Lawry Joseph Tilbury, whose unique music has been described by The Independent as ‘beautiful, backwards weirdness’ and by WARP Records as “an unknown supernatural force”.

Brighton Theatre is delighted to announce that BRIAN CAPRON will star in their new production of GOGOL for the Brighton Fringe 2012.

It’s 1978. Energy crisis, stagflation, space invaders and punk are destabilizing the little world of the Electricity Board Clerk. To keep his life on the rails, he sums up, organizes and plans his existence across the Void of Sunday. But unknown powers are undermining him. Betrayed by his Coat, and led astray by his Nose, his imagination breaks loose, as he transforms from self-effacing conformist to monstrous egomaniac, speeding like light across a frozen sea and somersaulting into infinity.

Neutrinos are unimaginably tiny particles of matter, that are the smallest amount of anything ever conceived by man. In this talk, I’ll introduce the neutrino and explain why so many physicists around the world are keen to study the elusive particle. Particular attention will be paid to the hot physics topic of last year: do neutrinos travel faster than the speed of light? In the coming months the MINOS experiment will weigh in with new results on the apparently speeding particle.
