Action for Happiness
Action for Happiness is a movement for positive social change. We’re bringing together people from all walks of life who want to play a part in creating a happier society for everyone. For fifty years we’ve aimed relentlessly at higher incomes. But despite being much wealthier, we’re no happier than we were five decades ago. At the same time we’ve seen an increase in wider social issues, including a worrying rise in anxiety and depression in young people. It’s time for a positive change in what we mean by progress.

The talk is called Ideas Man: The Stranger Notions of Francis Galton.
Comedy writer Daniel Maier has contributed to various BAFTA-winning comedy shows, including Harry Hill’s TV Burp, for which he wrote throughout its entire ten-series run. Maybe eleven. He lost count. He has written sketches for Peter Serafinowicz and Kevin Eldon, and co-wrote with Charlie Brooker the police spoof A Touch Of Cloth, for Sky1. His alternative football dictionary, Footypedia, was published by Century in 2008. Sir Francis Galton was a brilliant and peculiar Victorian. He was a crucial figure in the development of statistics and the study of heredity, but in Ideas Man: The Stranger Notions of Francis Galton, Daniel Maier takes a whistlestop tour of some of Galton’s odder and less-celebrated achievements and obsessions – from scientific tea-making and the dog whistle to proving the pointlessness of prayer and testing insect hearing.
