John Peel Night

Broadcaster John Peel was remembered tonight by some of the countless musicians and listeners his shows affected. Helen McCookerybook opened with a charming, haphazard solo set that featured welcome throwbacks to her time in Brighton pop-punks The Chefs and tales of acid trips on New Church Road. Following a memorial poem by journalist Ben Graham, London humourists I, Ludicrous upped the energy with their machine-driven guitar clatter, peaking with Festive Fifty classic ‘Preposterous Tales’. Suited and seedy garage group The Flaming Stars’ powerful headline found frontman Max Décharné sharing Peel reminiscences with piledriving organ attacks. A joyous tribute.
