British Science Festival Opens in Brighton

The annual British Science Festival opens in Brighton tomorrow (Tuesday 5 September) with over 100 free events taking place across the city.

The festival, last held in Brighton in 1983, is being co-hosted by Brighton University and Sussex University.

Events are being held in campus buildings as well as around the city. Venues include the Jubilee Library, Palace Pier, Woodvale Cemetery, coffee shops in the Lanes and even pubs.

Researchers, artists and entertainers will be showcasing their research on the Palace Pier – allowing visitors to experience science on the boardwalk

One of the first events tomorrow is “Psychology 101: for parents”. An anthropological tour of Woodvale Cemetery called “Dead & Buried” is also taking place tomorrow.

On Thursday an event being held at Sussex University campus will explore how to improve the quality of life for people with dementia.

The five-day festival is organised by the British Science Association. The organisers say the wide variety of talks, debates and performances ‘allows guests to immerse themselves in accessible, cutting-edge and impactful research’.  They hope to show that science is ‘not just about lab coats’.

The organisers have said that although the events are free but spaces are limited so booking is advisable.
