Crime And Punishment

An adaptation of Dostoyevsky’s Crime And Punishment (by Marilyn Campbell and Curt Colombus) was a daring choice to open Lewes Little Theatre’s 75th season, but it worked superbly, retaining the philosophical discourse of the book in a streamlined, serious, but enjoyable play. Jonny Fitzpatrick was gripping and convincing as Raskolnikov, capturing the anguished self-doubt through shuddering mannerisms, and his passionate pleas to the audience for forgiveness were powerful and memorable. The stark and effective staging ensured one focussed carefully on the dense subject matter, and the classic story, well-performed by the whole cast, provoked much discussion in the theatre’s lovely bar afterwards.
