Matilda The Musical

Books, books everywhere – even the set is magical, and that’s the least of the awe-inspiring ways this production captivates you with. From ariel feats of child-propulsion to shadow-puppetry and of course the incredible Tim Minchin-penned score and lyrics, anything is possible in this anthesis to Disney saccharine.
Most people are familiar with the storyline from Roald Dahl’s canon of clever children and repulsive adults. Matilda The Musical mixes mischief with cleverness, jaw-droppingly tight choreography and smart alec lyrics, with a script to appeal to both adults and children (from the decidedly adult-appealing Dennis Kelly responsible for C4’s dark drama Utopia) – it’s captivating from start to finish.
Stand out performances came from the monstrous Miss Trunchbull (Craig Els), who terrified and enthralled with equal glee, and Ben Lewis’ Bruce – a fabulous turn when caught with rogue cake.
Impressive and enjoyable in equal measure, no ownder there’s talk already for film version.
