Mayor holds reception for new honorary recorder of Brighton and Hove

The mayor of Brighton and Hove has held a reception to mark the appointment of the new honorary recorder of Brighton and Hove.

The reception was held at Brighton Town Hall in honour of Judge Shani Barnes who takes over from Judge Richard Brown, who retired last year.

As well as the mayor Councillor Denise Cobb, those attending included the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex Peter Field, Brighton and Hove City Council leader Jason Kitcat and chief executive Penny Thompson.

The council said: “The post of honorary recorder of Brighton and Hove is an honorary title and the principal role is to foster and maintain good relations between the judiciary and the local community.

“The post is offered to the senior circuit judge for the area.

“Judge Shani Barnes, who sits at Lewes Crown Court, was appointed at a full meeting of Brighton and Hove City Council in October, following the retirement of Judge Richard Brown.”

The mayor welcomed Judge Barnes as the unanimous choice of the full council and said she was glad that Judge Barnes had accepted the unpaid post.

She spoke about the importance of the links between the council, the local community and the judiciary.

Judge Barnes said: “I’m deeply honoured and touched by this honorary recordership of Brighton and Hove.

“I’m here to protect the community and ensure all those charged with offences are given a fair trial.

“I hope I bring closer the judiciary and the community so they know we are approachable and here to help them.”
