Pride

‘Pride’ is a resonant word in Brighton, and this masterpiece of a film extends its meaning brilliantly. It has bleak and beautiful landscapes, wonderful period detailing (1984) and all the clichés, quirky incidents and surprises you’d expect from a film about gays (flamboyant, sensible and self-conscious) and striking Welsh miners. There’s pain and bitterness too, but just when you fear it could slip into sentimentality, Matthew Warchus’ excellent direction holds it back. His award-worthy ensemble cast revel in their very different personal journeys and Stephen Beresford’s heart-warming and witty script will certainly make you angry, and laugh, in good measure.

Post script: I am concerned that this BBC film is rated 15 rather than PG. Is it so much more controversial than ‘Billy Elliot’ or ‘Brassed Off’?
