Saltdean Lido ‘at risk’ according to English Heritage

Saltdean Lido has been added to English Heritage’s list of “at risk” buildings.

It is one of five buildings and five conservation areas in Brighton and Hove to be described as at risk.

The heritage watchdog described the condition of the Grade II* listed art deco lido as poor and added: “It is suffering from a maintenance backlog and there is a particular deterioration of its reinforced concrete.”

English Heritage published its “at risk” register yesterday (Wednesday 19 October), highlighting the threat to four Grade I listed buildings in Brighton and Hove.

It included the West Pier and Marlborough House in the Old Steine in Brighton and 53 Brunswick Square and a mews building to the rear of 14 Brunswick Square in Hove.

The conservation areas listed as at risk were Benfield Barn, East Cliff, Queen’s Park, Sackville Gardens and Valley Gardens. All were assessed as deteriorating.

This afternoon (Thursday 20 October) the Save Saltdean Lido Campaign is due to present a petition at a meeting of Brighton and Hove City Council which owns the lido.

Campaigners want the council to end the lease that it granted to businessman Dennis Audley, who last year proposed building flats on the site.

They are also holding two fundraising Halloween discos at the Saltdean Tavern on Saturday 29 October. The first is for children, from 3pm to 5pm, and costs £2.50. The second, is from 7.30pm to midnight and costs £6.
