Action for Happiness

Action for Happiness is a movement for positive social change. We’re bringing together people from all walks of life who want to play a part in creating a happier society for everyone. For fifty years we’ve aimed relentlessly at higher incomes. But despite being much wealthier, we’re no happier than we were five decades ago. At the same time we’ve seen an increase in wider social issues, including a worrying rise in anxiety and depression in young people. It’s time for a positive change in what we mean by progress.

Kingdom

– May the Fourth Be With You

In a seaside town far far away…

It is a period of quinoa war. Drag King spaceships, striking from a Hanover bedsit, have won their first victory against the evil Tory Empire. During the battle, Drag King spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the i360, an armoured phallic symbol with enough power to destroy an entire planet… or at the very least East Sussex.

The force is strong with these Kings… their lightsabers are at the ready…

Hosted by NAILOR SWIFT.

Off The Top

Featuring Mc Baba Brinkman and Dr. Heather Berlin

Science rapper Baba Brinkman (rap guide to evolution) teams up with neuroscientist Dr. Heather Berlin (host of ‘Science Goes to the Movies’ on CUNY TV) to explore the brain basis of improvisation and comedy. Whats going on ‘under the hood’ when a comedian riffs or a rapper freestyles? Why are the spontaneous moments of life always the most memorable? Does anything actually rhyme with Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex?

The Foundry Group presents

Gilbert (No Sullivan)

Before writer W. S. Gilbert met composer Arthur Sullivan to form theatre’s most famous partnership, he wrote stories – outrageous, absurd and hilarious stories.

Brighton’s acclaimed writing duo Mitchell & Nixon – writers of ‘Those Magnificent Men’ and ‘Big Daddy Vs. Giant Haystacks’ – have turned Gilbert’s funniest tales and comic ballads into this hilarious new show, produced by the Foundry Group, winners of an Argus Angel for artistic excellence (2014). It returns to Brighton after a twenty-three date tour.

Performed by David Mounfield (‘Count Arthur Strong’s Radio Show’) and Brian Mitchell (‘The Ornate Johnsons’).

John Lake – Jazz and Poetry Layer Cake

A delicious serving of modern original Jazz and poetry created by the award-winning author John Harvey (author of the bestselling Charlie Resnick series) inter-layered by the sensational sounds of the John Lake Band. The evening will be a layer cake of music written by John Lake as recorded on his band’s albums ‘Up on the Downs’ and ‘Wave of Translation’ followed by an intense layer of performance-Jazz-laced poetry by John Harvey from his published works ‘Out of Silence’, ‘Ghosts of a Chance’ and ‘Bluer Than This’ – sometimes the two intermingle to form a mouth-watering combination to entertain and please the audience.

Voice

A new one-woman show written and performed by Vikki Parker.

Told through theatre, movement, comedy & singing the Blues… a woman immersed in her story of madness, covert control, her lost self & her TED talk fantasy of socially unacceptable facts…reveals her brave ways out.

A glimpse into the means by which SHE can speak, privately & publicly.

Afraid?

A thoughtful, challenging, sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking narrative about trauma survival that informs, provokes, soothes and liberates. A glimpse into one feminine perspective of our time. Vikki has been writing for many years… in secret.

She is an actor, writer, artist, Blues singer, thinker & thriver looking for ways to present stories that heal.

She is the Creative Director at Arts Unwritten, a new company that seeks to develop new writing for theatre in collaboration with movement and visual artists. Arts Unwritten seeks to harness the poetic and healing power of personal journey in performance.

The theme of madness and mental instability has been a frequent visitor to her writing, and directing, drawing on the taboos within family and society’s treatment of it.

‘Voice’ is the next stage in testing those waters and telling stories of personal truth. A new level of understanding about her own complexities, is presented in this new writing.

Felt

This is about the most important thing Michael Clarke ever felt. He would love to share that with you. But who exactly is pulling the strings, and could it be that there is something far more sinister at work? Something that runs deeper and darker than the world could have ever imagined? Proudly sponsored by the good people at Felta Skelta. Surreal, theatrical stand-up comedy from the New Act of The Year 2017 finalist and star of BBC Comedy’s ‘Hash Helmet’. “Takes risks which elevate him above most comedians” (London City Nights).
