» News: Employer wins top award

A Brighton employer has been ranked in the top 100 apprenticeship schemes in the country by City and Guilds.

Temptation Café in Gardner Street received the accolade last month at the National Apprenticeship Awards at the Mermaid Theatre in London.

Owner Peter Allinson set up the business in 2009 and recruited students he met whilst studying on the catering apprenticeship scheme at Northbrook College, Worthing.

He said: “As a small business, we feel very proud to see our apprentices achieving and making progress.”

» News: Return Of The Yak

A convoy with a difference headed out of Brighton on Saturday 23 July. Armed only with a sense for adventure (and a little knowledge of mechanics), four friends from Brighton (known as Return of the Yak) have taken up the challenge to drive a horrendously unsuitable car with a huge yak-shaped roof box 10,000 miles from the UK to Mongolia. During their journey, the team will be raising money for charities of personal importance to them: the Christina Nobel Children’s Foundation; MacMillan Cancer Support; and the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

The drive is part of the Mongol Rally. “We aim to complete the journey in
a small hatchback; a car almost entirely unsuited to the dilapidated roads
and dusty tracks that make up most of the route,” says Jack Rubinstein, one of the team. “Since it is only fair that someone should benefit from our self-induced hardships, we are also raising money for our three selected charities: The Christina Nobel Children’s Foundation (works primarily in Mongolia and Vietnam to provide support and education to disadvantaged children: http://www.justgiving.com/returnoftheyak)
MacMillan Cancer Support (provides care and comfort for cancer sufferers: http://www.justgiving.com/returnoftheyak-mcmillan), and Motor Neurone Disease Association (promoting research into motor neurone disease and provides care to those with the disease: http://www.justgiving.com/ReturnOfTheYak-MND

» News: expensive summer for parents

Parents could spend an average of £660 per child during the summer holiday according to a report by insurance company LV.

The Cost of a Child report calculates that UK parents are set to spend around £8.6 billion on childcare and entertainment.

Thirty-eight per cent of parents blame the length of the break, which is on average 42 days, and say school holidays are unaffordable.

Over half of families cannot afford a foreign holiday and nearly a third won’t have a break in Britain.

Figures also show that it costs around £210,000 to raise a child to the age of 21.

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
