» Colin Firth Interview: Words of wisdom

Biopic The King’s Speech is tipped to clean up at the 2011 awards ceremonies. Its modest star Colin Firth speaks clearly on old cabbage, ordering fish and stage fright

Based upon the very real obstacles King George VI suffered from his stutter, as well as the relationships that sought to help and hinder him because of it, The King’s Speech has already been nominated for seven Golden Globes, which generally leads the direction for Oscar nominations later in the year. » Film: The Tourist (tbc)

Director: Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck

Johnny Depp obviously had a ball with his English accent as Captain Jack Sparrow, as he’s hung right onto it for this action thriller of a movie, if a little less garish and a tad more clipped. Travelling by plane rather than galley, it’s good to see Depp in contemporary atire, as lovely as he was as both a pirate and a hatter in recent years.

Here he’s a tourist – Frank – travelling around Europe, when his path is crossed by Angelina Jolie’s mysterious and beautiful Elise. After a flirtatious encounter it transpires that their meeting was less chance and more baldfaced engineering on Elise’s part, drawing him into a plan he has no understanding of and a deadly game of cat and mouse. Is there any other kind? Together Frank and Elise hit the road, trying to find safety and uncannily getting closer the more dangerous their situation. Maybe there’s something in this aphrodisiac called adrenaline.

So far so regulation thriller, but the fact this has Johnny Depp attached to it, as well as a supporting cast that includes Paul Bettany, Timothy Dalton, Steven Berkoff and Rufus Sewell promises an above average show.

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
