Your queries about natural health answered by Jacquie Lane from the College of Naturopathic Medicine

Dear Jacquie,
My dad had a peptic ulcer and has just finished medication from the GP. What causes it, and what can he do naturally to prevent it coming back?
TF, Brighton

An ulcer is damage to the inner lining of the stomach or the upper part of the intestine (duodenum).

A bacteria called Helicobacter pylori, a spiral-shaped bacterium that lives in the acidic environment of the stomach is the main cause of ulcers in 80 to 90 per cent of cases.
The second most common cause is damage inflicted by pain killers such as aspirin and Ibruprofen and other anti-inflammatory tablets (NSAIDS). Ulcers can also occur in people weakened by severe disease. This is thought to result from poor oxygenation to the lining of the stomach. Rarely, a stomach ulcer is caused by excessive production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach or a condition called Crohns disease.

» Wave: What is… Aquapax?

Launched through Portslade wholesalers Infinity Foods in 2007, Aquapax is one of the purest natural mineral waters in the world. The water stays fresh with absolute integrity, packaged in majority paper cartons, which are both reusable and wholly recyclable.

In 2009 Aquapax won the coveted QATRAH award as ‘Best Bottled Water’ and the carbon balanced brand, based at the University of Sussex, in the Innovation Centre, now sells in five countries.

The low carbon impact cartons keep the water fresh, uniquely sealed from smells, light and air in airtight and leach free conditions. The insulating paper layers help it stay cooler longer. The fact you can reuse your empty cartons is an added bonus, particularly for children to refill them at school.

» Health: Pilates at Revitalise

Pilates at Revitalise is the perfect form of exercise to increase your core strength

How are you sitting right now? Bad posture and inefficient breathing may not be something you list as reasons to embark on a new form of exercise, but that’s exactly what Joseph Pilates (1883–1967) had in mind. As a result of the ‘modern lifestyle’, Joseph devised exercises to improve his own physical strength (he suffered from asthma, rheumatic fever and rickets as a child) and so Pilates was born

Pilates is similar to yoga and increasingly popular in society. Classes are held at Revitalise in Hove for all strengths and abilities. Special classes are even tailored for pregnancy, so women can keep in shape with a gentle form of exercise that works the core muscles.

If an energetic aerobics class is daunting, then Pilates may be for you. Each Pilates exercise is built around eight basic principles: relaxation, co-ordination, concentration, centering, breathing, alignment, stamina and flowing movements.

Pilates encourages the use of the mind to control muscles, focusing attention on core postural muscles that keep the human body balanced and provide support for the spine. Pilates exercises teach awareness of breath and of alignment of the spine, and strengthen the deep torso and abdominal muscles.

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
