Victoria Nangle reports back from her Edinburgh adventure up North

Edinburgh Festival is like Supergran – is there nothing that she cannae do? It would seem not, as my mad dash up to the Scottish capital saw me take in a mad musical involving a duchess, a lesbian pirate queen and a baby, several sketch shows – one of which accidentally got its audience to shout ‘Mohammed’ – and quite a bit of top class stand-up comedy. And I only went up for the weekend. The air fair crackled with creativity. Read the rest of this article »

Victoria Nangle gets ready for the land of opportunity that is comedy outside the Ed Fest

Getting the right balance of gigs as a new act is a fine art. You don’t want to go rushing into it too fast so that you exhaust yourself, use up your friend quota of support (they won’t keep coming to hear the same set ad infinitum), and have no one left to book you again for another six months. Yup, do remember that if you’ve just played a comedy night they probably won’t book you again for a good old while or until you have a new set. They’ve got regular punters who are out to see a live show, not a live repeat of the last show they saw. Read the rest of this article »

Victoria Nangle catches up with funny lady and mistress of Old Rope – Tiffany Stevenson

Tiffany Stevenson is lovely, and my goodness does she work hard. Not only will she be doing her own show up at the Edinburgh Festival she’s also co-orgainser with Phil Nichol of the well respected and attended Old Rope nights, evenings of established comics trying out new material. So what’s her own show about? Read the rest of this article »

» Not all the funny makes the stand-up grade

Victoria Nangle reckons a funny thing happened… but was it stand-up?

The other week I went on holiday. I know, I’m lucky. Now, I went on holiday to a land that didn’t trade in the Euro or the dollar. This meant it was very hot, quite Muslim and not a lot of other people that looked like me. We were staying quite near a mosque and I kept worrying that I was wearing inappropriate attire. Were my sleeves too short? Should I be wearing a scarf on my head? Were my sandalled feet too flagrant? Alright, I got a little paranoid in my concerns but people were staring at me. The second day of our holiday we went to a Western Quarter where everyone was wearing Western clothes and I looked quite conservative, and STILL people were staring at me. My friend even spotted a mother pointing me out to her child! What the blazes?! And then I remembered… that I am a giant. Read the rest of this article »

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
