Zara Baker finds Revitalise is a one-stop-shop in promoting health and wellbeing

There are few places (except the ever-expanding supermarket perhaps) who seem to have everything. But when it comes to looking after number one, I’ve found one place who can answer my questions relating to health and nutrition, teach me a fitness class like yoga or Pilates, and offer health food and supplements with practical and professional advice too. What’s more, it’s local and independent, meaning great customer care and unrivalled service right on my doorstep.

I’m talking about Revitalise in Hove. Back in 2002 it was called Planet Janet – a charming wellbeing centre focused on the spiritual side of healing. Therapies were limited and Tarot cards and crystal healing were the norm. Fast forward to 2003, when husband and wife team Clare and Richard Brown took over the business, and changes began to occur – including, in 2006, the name.

With a background in sports massage and fitness, Clare naturally expanded the business, taking a more mainstream approach to health and wellbeing. “When we first took on the business, there was only one Pilates class,” she says, “now we offer over 20 Pilates classes a week.” As for massage therapy, deep tissue is the most popular – available seven days a week to their clients.

Other major changes include the addition of beauty therapies using natural, organic products as well as osteopathy,
physiotherapy and chiropractic treatments. Every aspect of health and wellbeing appears to be covered at Revitalise, encompassing the mind, body and soul. In fitness, they launched Power Plate classes in January 2009, at a time when the buzz for this effective method of toning the body was just starting. They have embraced new health and beauty trends, with fully trained therapists offering specialist services like Laser Lipo to their clients. Just this year, laser hair removal treatment has been introduced. With all this, you’d think they’d need a ‘bigger boat’, but it is through careful and detailed timetables and scheduling that Revitalise has become an effective business with a variety of services.

There are nine rooms in total; one is used solely for colonic therapy, which can simply be seen as the ultimate body detox; one room is used solely for Power Plates; three further group rooms are used for Pilates, yoga and workshops; plus a changing room and three therapy rooms for acupuncture, massage, reiki, shiatsu… the list is endless – just pick up one of their leaflets or visit the website to see for yourself!

“All our therapists are self employed, renting the rooms from us after an assessment has been made and a contract signed,” Clare explains. “We have chosen therapists with specific qualifications and experience in their chosen field.” This covers everything from colonic hydro-therapists with nutritional training, to yoga teachers and deep tissue massage therapists.

“We are a one-stop-shop for maintaining and improving overall health and wellbeing,” Clare continues. “Our services are fantastic for preventing ill health and boosting health after an injury such as Pilates for back care, or massage and yoga for stress, and colonic hydrotherapy and nutrition for digestive complaints. There are many different therapies available for customers who have individual needs and we believe we offer something for everyone!

Another new development is the closure of their café and, in its place, the opening of a new health shop in January this year. The product range is forever expanding. Here you will find a full range of Infinity Foods, Ecover cleaning products, children’s foods, super foods, body care products, supplements and herbal remedies.
A nutritionist works in the shop Monday to Saturday (10am–4.30pm) for any additional advice you may need.

This is just a taster of what’s on offer at Revitalise and, as you can tell, it’s an extensive list. Over the coming months, we will be highlighting various treatments and services Revitalise offer and how they can benefit you.
