From the Editor: Tuesday 24th January

Two weekends ago I ventured out of the house properly for the first time this year. Cold-ridden and self-pitying, I thankfully had commitments and nice stuff to do to take my mind off it.
I love Duke’s At Komedia: the seating is generous and comfortable and the screen is sharp and large, filling the space perfectly. The pub/cafe environment is also well-suited to pre- or post-film catch ups with a friend.

Manchester By The Sea was a quiet, melancholy film (not too much wallowing though) with some of the most well-drawn, rounded, real characters I’ve seen on screen in a long time. Kenneth Lonergan’s justifiably lauded film is worth seeking out if you can find it: particularly if you’re a fan of slow-burning, simmeringly beautiful drama like Six Feet Under or the films of Hirokazu Koreeda.

Sunday saw the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra play the Dome in one of their regular afternoon concerts. If you’ve never been then I urge you to try it out. Full price tickets start at £12 and under 18s and students can go for half price. It was great to see some younger people in the crowd, which also boosts the atmosphere and helps to bridge the pop/classical divide (something I’m passionate about as regular readers might already know).

Live classical music is a startling spectacle and conjures a sense of musical awe that’s hard to convey in this little column here. The next concert is on Sun 5th Feb and I think you should consider it if you want to try something new.

Enough gushing anyway. We’re lucky to have so much to do in the city on a weekend, and the amount of options we have is worth celebrating. Email me if you hear about a great event and I could maybe feature it in the magazine, on TV, or might just want to go myself.
