Brighton & Hove Council to present budget proposals

Proposals for the council’s 2018/19 budget will be set out in a report that is being published today (Wednesday 22 November). The report, which sets out budget proposals for the next financial year will be discussed at the Policy, Resources and Growth Committee on Thursday 30 November 2017.

The council’s annual budget funds over 700 services for people living and working in Brighton & Hove.

The report includes proposals for how much Council Tax will be next year.

The level of Council Tax is determined by the budget. Currently, Council Tax provides 17% of the Council’s income. This goes partly towards funding for Sussex Police and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.

By law half the budget is restricted to spending on: schools; housing benefit; council housing and public health.

In 2017/18 £329 million came from government grants ring fenced for schools and housing benefit. £52 million came from housing rents and is ring fenced for council housing.

Chancellor Phillip Hammond is setting out the Autumn budget today.
