Chicago

The ‘sexy’ and ‘stylish’ touring production of Chicago is starting to show more than a few wrinkles. This particular show even displayed arthritic performances from some of its principle cast.

The trouble is, the three leads (Velma, Roxy, Billy Flynn) are not mature performers. Their song and dance routines were clunky and uninspiring: Despite Stefan Booth (Flynn) having a deep and luxurious voice, he only managed a side-to-side for his numbers. The chorus, on the other hand, went at the show like seasoned professionals and helped to lift the dreariness and, at times, forced sexiness of the principle cast.

Alex Weatherhill (Mary Sunshine) was the only redeeming vocal performance, whilst the band on stage seemed to enter into the swing of things more than anyone else.

This Chicago needs a face lift and an injection of razzle dazzle.
