Best Coast
The Californians returned to their spiritual Brighton home to wind up their tour in front of a sell out crowd. Bethany Cosentino’s wobbly off-key vocals seemed well suited to the dreamier, shoe-gazey numbers but the charm soon wore off, with the sun-kissed poppier songs crying out for a better voice. The set was a mixture of Velvets/girl group lo-fi angst-ridden slowies and punky Bangles and Cure flavoured rock outs and the audience were word-perfect throughout. ‘No On Like You’, a Twin Peaks prom ballad, was divine and this night of mixed blessings ended well with indie anthem ‘Boyfriend’.
