Brighton speed trial rider remains critical in hospital

A 68-year-old speed triallist remains in a critical condition in hospital today after the fatal crash on Brighton seafront on Saturday (8 September).

Sussex Police appealed for witnesses to the crash which left his 38-year-old woman passenger dead.

The crash happened at about 6.15pm on Saturday as crowds watched the rider’s black Honda Asco hit a wall during the historic Brighton Speed Trials. The event has been running since 1905.

The rider, from London, suffered serious injuries and is in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

His passenger, who came from Mildenhall in Suffolk, died from her injuries.

Sergeant Huw Watts, of the Sussex Police Road Policing Unit, said: “This was a tragic incident during what should have been an enjoyable event.

“Our thoughts are with the woman’s family and friends at this time.

“We are currently investigating how the collision happened and would like to appeal for anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone who has any pictures or footage to contact Sussex Police.”
