Brighton project collects winter coats for children

A group of volunteers has come together to help protect the most vulnerable children in the city from the cold this winter.

Brighton and Hove Coats for Kids is a short-term project aimed at getting coats to the children most in need of them.

They are looking for donations of clean, good-quality coats that will fit children up to 18 years of age.

Coats for Kids will distribute the clothing through organisations in the city that are working with families in poverty.

The group is also asking businesses to offer their premises as drop-off points for donations.

According to research by Save the Children, one in seven of poorest children in Britain does not have a warm winter coat.

The campaign has already gained support from members of the police, politicians, charities and businesses.

Mike Weatherley, the Conservative MP for Hove, said: “Coats for Kids is a great community initiative that deserves support from residents across the city.”

While the campaign is currently intended to last only throughout the winter, this will be reviewed in early spring.
