Met Office issues snow warning for Brighton and Hove tomorrow

Brighton and Hove may have more snow tomorrow (Friday 18 January).

The Met Office has issued a blizzard warning for parts of southern England with snowfall of up to 2ft forecast on higher ground.

In the worst-affected areas, the Met Office said: “The public should avoid all non-essential journeys.”

In other areas, it said: “The public should be prepared for disruption, including altering travel plans.”

Southern, the train operator, has issued a revised timetable with deeper snow expected in places between Brighton and London.

The company said: “The latest weather forecast for tomorrow suggests significant snowfall across many parts of the Southern network.

“In preparation for this Southern will be operating an amended timetable for Friday 18 January.

“Trains will not split or join at Haywards Heath and will mean passengers who travel on the East and West Coastways into and out of London may be affected.

“Passengers are advised to check train times before travelling.”

The Met Office issued its severe weather warning at lunchtime today (Thursday 17 January).

It added that snow showers may follow on Saturday with some coverage and icy roads and pavements causing problems on Sunday.

Temperatures are expected to rise to about 4C during the day on Monday (21 January) before another cold snap starting in the middle of next week.

Brighton and Hove City Council said: “We’re currently experiencing a cold snap and there is a risk of icy roads. There is also a risk of snow and ice from tomorrow.

“Cold temperatures are forecast to continue over the weekend.

“Our gritters will be out spreading salt this evening and we are ready to grit and salt during any severe weather over the weekend.

“As always, we will continue to monitor the situation and do further road treatments when necessary.

“Due to the cold weather, our rough sleepers team is providing extra help to homeless people in the city.

“You can let them know about rough sleepers by calling 0808 1680414 (free phone number) or by emailing brighton.rsssrt@cri.org.uk.”
