Comedy: Francesca Martinez & Henning Wehn
This Sunday sees two top shows come to two different venues – neither of which are t-shirt-wearing boys!
There has been a criticism unfairly levelled at contemporary comedians that their ranks are overly peppered with twentysomething boys in t-shirts, vaguely auditioning for a job at T4. This Sunday brings us a treat of two very different shows from comics at the top of their game, neither of which remotely fit into this category, and are all the better for it.
Francesca Martinez, the original self-proclaimed ‘wobbly woman’ brings her show back to town after receiving a fabulously warm reception this summer with it. Investigating what happens when you’re branded ‘abnormal’ in a world obsessed with normality, this show is Martinez’s defiant answer.
Engaging, funny and with a unique perspective that is also instantly identifiable – who hasn’t felt that they’re not ‘normal’? – this is a class act. With support from local favourite musical comedian David Jordan too.
Across town in Hove, The Old Market finds BBC Radio 4 favourite and telly regular Henning Wehn also returning with a show due to popular demand. Wehn declared himself the German Comedy Ambassador many moons ago but continues to send up both the British and their pre-conceived ideas of what it is to be German with aplomb, endorsing hard work and good time-keeping, along with a healthy enthusiasm for paying tax.
Endearing and sharply smattered with punchlines, Wehn’s show is again challenging ideas of the norm.
So embrace being different and round off your weekend and your month this Sunday with a top quality and well-honed comedy show. Without a post-teen floppy haircut in sight. At least not on stage.
