Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, David Hill (conductor), Tasmin Little (violin)

Elgar’s ‘Wand Of Youth Suite No.2’ kicked off an evening dubbed ‘An English Idyll’ and it was sublime, with striking bassoon and flute in the first ‘March’ movement and dazzling percussion in the final ‘Wild Bears’ piece. Delius’ ‘The Walk To Paradise Garden’ was beautifully hazy, but Vaughan William’s popular ‘The Lark Ascending’ was more moving. Tasmin Little bewitched the audience with a graceful, fluid performance on the violin. The evening ended with Elgar’s first symphony, which was a mesmerising wash of colours that was engrossing and thrilling. Petroc Trelawny also deserves a mention for his eloquent and dynamic presenting, giving some useful context and insight for classical newcomers.
