Stand with syria
Last week thousands of people around the world came together to hold a global vigil to mark the third anniversary of the crisis in Syria. In Trafalgar Square, a huge gathering of supporters – many of them children – watched as Nelson’s column was lit up with the message ‘Stand with Syria’ before being changed to show a light projection of Banksy’s iconic “girl with a red balloon”, which the artist had redesigned to feature a young Syrian refugee.
Withsyria
The #WithSyria coalition is made up of 120 humanitarian and human rights groups from 24 countries, including Save the Children, Oxfam, Amnesty International, Hand in Hand for Syria and the International Rescue Committee. The campaign is calling for urgent action to ensure Syrians in need can access aid, and for the voices of ordinary Syrians to be heard and heeded in reconvened peace talks. Actor Idris Elba, a supporter of the campaign, commented, “It was important for me to support and lend my voice to this stunning animation that alongside Banksy’s new piece is part of the #WithSyria campaign. Ordinary Syrian civilians continue to pay the heaviest price in a conflict that has already wrecked millions of lives. Let’s stand with Syria today.”

stop the clock!
We’ve just heard that the one and only Example will be gracing the city with his presence at this year’s Great Escape festival. The master of the live gig and orchestrator of the craziest mosh pit you’ll ever get stuck in will be playing The Dome on 8 May. We met Mr Elliot Gleave last year at the private view of Goldie’s art show and were absolutely charmed by the rapper see you in the mosh pit, Brighton!
Big fat weddings
News reaches us that showbiz work-horse and Brighton coffee shop owner Peter Andre will be having not one, but TWO wedding ceremonies when he gets hitched to his fiancé and babymama Emily MacDonagh. Pete has said he will be having a traditional English affair followed by a Big Fat Greek Wedding in his native Cyprus. It would be rude not to. Yamas, Peter!
Emma & the big smoke
It is with heavy heart that we bid a very fond farewell to the artist formerly known as ‘the littlest monkey’ – Emma Gilhooly, who has been with us for almost three years. A stalwart of the JBPR family, Emma could always be counted on for her awesome PR skills (front page of The Guardian anyone?) her eyebrow-raising outfits (pink hair, crop top, vertiginous heels), her tendency to burst into tears when she gets left out (big baby) and her unwavering affection for Zayn from 1D. EG, we salute you. Go forth and conquer the Big Smoke…
Get ink’d
Get yourselves down to Ink’d this week and have a good look at their latest opening, Signs of Light, which showcases a dazzling selection of artists working in neon and light, including Andy Doig, Carne Griffiths, Dan Baldwin, Grande Dame, Magnus Gjoen, Pure Evil and Tina Keane. Light boxes and neon galore – including a sofa, a washing line complete with smalls and a full alphabet – will transformed the gallery into a shiny ghetto grotto. Signs of Light runs until Monday 21 April. www.ink-d.co.uk
